Job Description

The HRIT Architect is responsible for defining and governing the technical architecture for HR technology solutions across the enterprise, with a primary focus on Workday. This role ensures solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards and long‑term platform strategy. Operating within the IT organization, the HRIT Architect defines and governs the technical architectural direction for the Workday platform, aligning HRIS, HR Operations, Integration Architecture, and the HRIT delivery team around a common, scalable, and supportable approach to solution design and implementation. This role requires deep, hands‑on Workday architecture experience and the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

HR Technology Architecture & Design

  • Define, own, and govern the enterprise technical architecture for Workday and related HR platforms
  • Establish architectural standards and design principles to ensure solutions are scalable, supportable, secure, and maintainable over time
  • Provide architectural oversight for Workday configuration, extensibility, security, data models, and platform capabilities
  • Review and approve solution designs to ensure alignment with architectural direction and enterprise standards, minimizing long‑term technical debt
  • Partner closely with Integration Architecture to ensure cohesive, end‑to‑end solution designs across systems and integrations

Platform Stabilization, Hardening & Standardization

  • Assess the current Workday implementation and identify opportunities to strengthen, harden, and standardize configurations, patterns, and integrations
  • Lead architectural efforts to improve platform consistency, supportability, and operational resilience over time
  • Address areas of technical debt, inconsistency, or non‑standard implementation through intentional architectural improvements
  • Define target‑state architectural patterns and guide the evolution from current‑state to future‑state solutions in a pragmatic, phased manner
  • Ensure enhancements and new implementations incrementally improve the overall health and sustainability of the Workday platform

Solution Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership

  • Serve as the architectural authority for HR technology solutions, guiding both IT and HR partners toward a common implementation approach
  • Work collaboratively with HRIS and HR Operations as functional HR business partners to shape solutions that meet business needs while preserving platform integrity
  • Clearly communicate architectural direction, trade‑offs, and constraints to both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Influence solution decisions through expertise and guidance rather than direct authority

Implementation Oversight & Governance

  • Provide architectural leadership to internal teams and external implementation partners throughout the solution lifecycle
  • Ensure consistent application of architectural standards, security controls, and compliance requirements
  • Identify architectural risks and proactively recommend mitigation strategies
  • Support post‑implementation stabilization and continuous improvement by addressing architectural gaps and improvement opportunities

Platform Evolution & Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current on Workday roadmap updates, emerging features, and industry best practices
  • Assess new capabilities and recommend architectural approaches for adoption where appropriate
  • Contribute to long‑term HR Technology strategy by identifying opportunities to improve platform flexibility, performance, and sustainability

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • Minimum 6–8 years of progressive IT experience, including hands‑on HR systems configuration and architecture, Workday preferred
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Workday Architect, Lead, or equivalent role on enterprise‑scale implementations
  • Proven experience defining architectural direction and standards for complex platforms
  • Experience partnering with HRIS and HR Operations organizations
  • Experience collaborating with integration teams to design and support complex system integrations
  • UKG or similar Time & Attendance platform experience is a strong plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep technical expertise in Workday architecture, configuration frameworks, security, and data structures
  • Strong architectural mindset with the ability to balance flexibility, scalability, and supportability
