Q&A with a Wabtec Recruiter: Internships, Rotational Programs and Early Career Advice

Thinking about launching your career at Wabtec? Whether you're exploring internships, co-ops, or our rotational development programs like LEAD and STEP, we've got answers to the questions early-career candidates ask most.

Q: What makes Wabtec internships different?

A: From day one, you're working on real projects that matter. You'll collaborate with experienced professionals, gain hands-on experience and build skills that go beyond the classroom. Plus, you'll get exposure to leadership, participate in CSR activities and tour facilities to see how innovation happens up close.

Q: How do interns get to meet people and network?

A: We build networking into the experience (and we make it fun). Interns connect through onboarding events, mentorship programs, team lunches and facility tours. But that's just the start. From mini golf and paintball outings to volunteering with local organizations, there's always something going on. These activities help interns bond, build relationships and feel part of the Wabtec community from day one.

Q: What is the LEAD program?

A: LEAD stands for Leadership, Expertise and Accelerated Development. It's a two-year rotational program for recent grads that builds domain expertise, leadership skills and business acumen. There are LEAD programs in 4 functional disciplines: Engineering, Operations/Manufacturing, Finance and Information Technology. You'll rotate through four six-month assignments in roles that will develop and challenge you. It's designed to help you grow fast and go far.

Q: What is the STEP program?

A: STEP (Services Technical Excellence Program) is a newer rotational program launched by our Freight Services business. It's designed for early-career professionals (under 5 years of experience) and focuses on building deep knowledge of our products, customers and business. Participants rotate through various teams and start in the field as Technical Advisors, so you'll get hands-on experience from day one.

Q: What's the difference between LEAD and STEP?

A: Great question! Both are rotational programs, but with distinct differences and focus areas.

LEAD is a two-year program, consisting of four six-month rotations. The program is business-focused, with a focus on developing business acumen, domain expertise, building a network and connecting the dots across our business. LEAD has programs in operations/manufacturing, engineering, finance and IT. It's ideal for grads looking to build experiences in different areas of the business to help launch their career. The operations and finance programs require relocation during the program. Engineering and IT work all four rotations at one location.

STEP is a three-year program, consisting of three one-year rotations. The focus is more technical and field-oriented, focused on developing expertise within Freight Services. It's perfect for those with technical degrees who want hands-on experience and are open to relocating and working in shop environments. This program requires site moves for each new rotation.

Q: Who's a good fit for the LEAD and STEP programs?

A: We're looking for candidates with technical degrees - engineering, automotive technology, agriculture equipment technology and more. You should be open to relocating annually, be comfortable working in shop environments and be excited about field-based roles. Academic performance matters, but we don't have a hard GPA cutoff.

Q: How can I stand out when applying?

A: Tailor your resume to the role. Highlight hands-on experience, leadership roles and any projects that show initiative. If you've worked with teams, solved problems, or led something - even in school - talk about it. And don't forget to show us why Wabtec excites you.

Q: What happens after the internship or rotational program?

A: Many interns and program participants transition into full-time roles. You'll build a network, gain visibility and develop skills that set you up for long-term success. These programs aren't just stepping stones; they're launchpads.
